Offshore fishing still firing!

The Maroochy River has been fishing particularly well over the past week, with plenty of action reported! The Maroochy River Mouth is one such place which has been attracting plenty of people, and by simply wading out across the sand flats, great flathead fishing is even accessible even without a boat! Soft plastics are by far the most effective method of fishing here, with clear, baitfish type lures such as the boom baits and Squidgy Whipbaits proving themselves to be the best. Another great thing about this area is the whiting fishing. These whiting love a run-out tide, and like the flathead, wading across the flats casting small surface lures or lightly weighted yabbies produces some great fish!
On the offshore scene, Spanish and spotted mackerel have been running amuck on the close-in reefs, with trolling a pilchard rigged on a set of gangs and skirt proving an effective way of catching these speedsters. As popular as the pillies are, trolling deep diving hard bodied lures at a fairly quick speed has probably been the most effective way of bagging a feed of mackerel, and from the reports we’re hearing, the “red head” colour’s going off!”
The beaches haven’t been fishing too badly either, with plenty of whiting and dart keeping both the families and the diehard fisherman happy! If you’re after a bit more of a challenge off the beach however, mulloway have been in good numbers too, with the hours just before dark producing some great fish!
This is the last week of the MACKEREL MANIA COMPETITION that Davo's are running during January. With the spotted mackerel coming on the bite you'll have the chance to win a $500.00 gift voucher! To be eligible, bring in your best spotted mackerel to be weighed, measured and photographed. There will be points awarded for length, weight and condition of the catch and bonus points for best smile and best story. The winner will be decided on January 31 and announced as soon as possible after that date. Both Davo's stores (Noosa and Marcoola) will be accepting entries.
