Port Phillip Bay

Good customer Oleg fished during the week down at point Nepean and caught himself a lovely mixed bag. Using squid and pippies as bait Oleg caught some beautiful red mullet and some whiting to 44 cm.

On Thursday Amelia headed out from St Leonard's with her father and grandfather in search of whiting. Whilst the last of the ebb was slow the start of the flood saw 30 whiting caught in as many minutes before the increasing wind ended the day. Mussel and squid caught in the same area were equally an effective bait.

Joe Magro sent in this report of his kids and nephews Grace, Jordan, Matty and Emily where they fished at Weribee and caught 28 calamari. They said it was very cold and calm with a variety of different coloured jigs working during the day.

Western port Bay

Some great reports from customers have come in this week of some good squid fishing near Tyabb bank. When the weather gives us a break we have seen customers catching some very large squid on the high tide using dark jigs. Darren and his friend Bill came into the shop during the week to tell us that Tyabb Bank was the stand out for there last trip on the water with squid to 40cm hood not uncommon.

Lucas was at it again this week with a very nice gummy shark that he caught with his Dad and POP. They were fishing in the western entrance whilst braving the cold and icy conditions.

Melbourne Rivers

Report from Keysborough Angling club
Sunday 10 July was the first of our 2016 / 2017 angling season trips. This trip was designated as a Melbourne Rivers trip which allows members to fish any river flowing into Port Phillip Bay.
This time 11 members who attended travelled to Werribee River. The weather was very, very chilly but at least the rain stayed away. We even saw some sunshine for at least a few minutes at a time. Yes - Melbourne weather very changeable.
21 Bream were brought back to the scales for a total weight of 13.17Kg. We saw some good fish brought back to the scales - weighing between 870 grams and 970 grams.
Norm Bull caught a nice bag of 7 bream for a total weight of 4.6Kg and Terry Quirk weighed in 3 fish for a total of 1.57Kg.
Our angling rules state that all fish to be weighed in gilled and gutted unless trophy sized fish.
Graham Simester could not wipe the smile off his face. He weighed in 1 bream - 1.74Kg whole and 46 cm in length which was caught on a fresh water yabbie. Our weigh master described this fish as an 'absolute thumper'.
Overall - a good start to our season.
