Report 2/6/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Jun 03, 2016 4:01 pm

This week has seen some great weather finally, with clear skies and very light winds it seems the fisherman have been out and about catching plenty of fish. The jumbo tuna bite continues to grow with interest and should only get better on this next full moon. Locally the squid and whiting fishing continues to go from strength to strength and we are starting to hear some good reports of salmon in our bays.

Port Phillip Bay
Joel Ryan fished with his dad in perfect conditions on Monday afternoon. The boys headed to St Leonards where they got a bag of 35 solid whiting. Best bait was pippies and squid.

Western Port
Kosta caught this monster calamari while fishing with his uncle at stony point on Friday arvo. The boys had a fantastic evening session with plenty of squid being caught. Kosta said the Evergreen size 3 jigs were doing the damage.

Matt Fished Western Port with mate James in the kayaks on Friday night with the goal of chasing some big Gummies.
They were certainly not disappointed with Matt landing this fantastic Gummy tipping the scales at the 10kg mark. The boys fished the turn of tide and cured eel was the successful bait for the evening.

OUT OF TOWN

Apollo Bay
Our mate Con has been fishing out of Apollo Bay the last week with Hit and Run charters getting his clients on to some great schoolies. Con has been fishing both skirts and diving lures but says the the 80 fathoms skirt in lumo colour has been working best.

Lakes Entrance
Fishing Fever customer Andrew sent us this photo of a jumbo sword landed of Lakes Entrance. After attending our swordfish talk night Andrew planned a trip except his mates bailed on him. Andrew then went out solo and landed this fish after a 3.5 hour battle on a 37kg outfit weighing in at 130kg. The Sword fish fishery is firing up so be sure to drop into the store to get some advice on how to catch your own sword!

Eucumbene River
Dan from Navico Australia fished the Eucumbene River on the weekend and the boys had a ball catching some cracker Browns on nymphs and glow bugs up in the trees and some big fish on Rapalas down on the big pools near the mouth of the river.

Portland
Our good mate Don Ung headed out off Cape Bridgewater on Sunday with the family. Don reports a great morning bite along the 80 metre line but as the day went on the conditions turned to glass making the fish very finicky. Don says all fish came from blind bites.

Simon from Red Hot Fishing Charters in Portland has been fishing well the last week. Getting plenty of school fish tuna up 20kgs. We have found the western waters off cape Bridgewater the best this week with bullet and cup faced heads in purple/blue and green/lumo the best combos.
Simon also manged to snag some dolphin fish among the schools of bluefin up to 20kgs out off discovery bay.

Welcome to winter, the far west coast of Victoria continues to produce outstanding fishing. This past week has seen a resurgence in Mahi Mahi. There has been over a dozen taken this week with models up to 20kg. These fish are found amongst the bait with the bluefin schools. The bluefin bite continues to impress also with bag out sessions on fish to 20kg still being taken. We have found the western waters off cape Bridgewater the best this week with bullet and cup faced heads in purple/blue and green/lumo the best combos. Jumbo bluefin are also present though not stacked up in big numbers at this stage. There's been several landed this week and quite a few stories of guys getting dusted. With settled weather forecast over the coming week a lot will be exposed. We are hitting the half way mark of the tuna season so get onboard for a day you won't forget. - Jason from magnet charters
