Report 23/6/16

Not too much offshore action again this week.

On the beaches a few anglers braved the cold and got out onto some nice gummies and a big schoolie. The anglers managed these sharks on the high tide during the night. The sharks took a simple paternoster rig baited with salmon fillets and they fished in one of the gutters down near Betka River.

There were some big schools of averaged sized salmon around too over the weekend with plenty of fish in the 40-50cm entering the gutters close to shore. The fish were smashing blue 25g Laser Lures better than anything else being thrown.

Some absolutely massive tailor (For Victoria) have also been harassing the baitfish in the gutters along the beaches. Tailor over 55cm fork have been taken whilst spinning for salmon. Fish over 60cm fork have also been taken with some bigger un-stoppables also stealing lures.

Some nice bream have been taken down in Coul’s Inlet despite the muddy water. Most fish have been taking fresh prawns fished on the bottom.

The flathead have also appeared down in the main channel with some nice sized table fish being taken on most soft plastics fished closely to the bottom.

On the incoming tide some good yellowfin bream and silver trevally have been taken fishing the snags in front of Horse Island. The best method has been fishing Zman Slim SwimZ just off the front of the snags on light jig heads.

The black bream and flathead are still schooled up in 3-4m of water around Goodwin Sands but have slowed down a fair bit this week. Sounding up the schools before peppering the area with Stiffy Devil Fish vibes has been the best method to pin the remaining fish.

There hasn’t been too much action in the top lake but Palmers Bank and Dead Finish have been producing a few decent sized bream and flatties. Most have been taken rolling hard bodies out off the drop offs.

Some good tailor have been down the back of Fair Haven. Most fish have been taken casting to bust ups with small surface lures and metals.

The majority of action from the bream this week has been down the back of the bottom lake. Little River, Allen’s Head and Howe Bight have all produced some good fish over 40cm. the fish haven’t been too fussy in these areas but having the lure close to the bottom for 90% of the cast has been the way to get the bigger fish.
