With the sniff of Spring in the air, it is great to see some early season snapper starting to role through. It would be a lie to say that we have been blessed with good weather to kick of the season, but still you can feel the gradual move toward milder weather and hopefully a few more flat seas. This week, still plenty of squid and whiting but yes the first of ‘red’ fever starting to appear on the brow of local anglers.

Young staff member Luke Goldstein and his mate Jake, are always keen for a fish – nothing like the enthusiasm of youth! The boys will be out there rain, hail or shine and this week was no different. Luke and Jake were fishing their favourite pier at the top of the bay, looking for an after dark red. They managed a number of pinkies before Jake caught a quality 4kg red. The fish were all taken of small strips of either squid or pilchard.

Whiting have been in good numbers, although there has been a fair bit of talk about the fact that one of the two remaining netters in Port Phillip Bay has been spending quite a lot of time around our local waters on the southern peninsula catching fish.

Throughout the week we have had good reports off Rye, Blairgowrie and Sorrento where there have been plenty of good fish and squid.

Matt Cini from Reel Time Fishing Charters and Compleat Angler’s Jarrod Day, had a great day with a bunch of Matt’s customers. They found squid in the Rye Channel and a heap of whiting off Blairgowrie. Tasty fishing for the start of Spring.

Out of Town, my good friend John Cahill and his partner Lydia did the big drive from Melbourne to the Copeton Dam, inland of Coffs Harbour. They were chasing the elusive metre+ cod and had high hopes of a good trip. After a couple of big fish, just shy of 1m, John’s managed to pull a genuine metre plus cod… In John’s words it was truly a fish of a thousand cast, making it all the more worthwhile. Congrats guys, a successful mission!

Gawaine Blake had a weekend of highs and lows. Guiding with Anthony Sica, the boys pulled the hooks on a barrel after 40mins on the first day. On the second day Gawaine lost one boatside after fighting it for 3.5 hours when the wind-on popped. With that said they were still victorious with Anthony managing his firs barrel that went a massive 120.6kg…. Awesome results chasing barrels in Spring!
