Report 24/4/16

It’s been a lovely week of warm, autumn weather and I am really pleased about the fishing at the moment. It’s probably easy to believe that fishing tackle stores always want to hype things up but the genuine reality at the moment is that we have sensational whiting and squid fishing and that is no word of a lie! While squid numbers are excellent, the size is modest – the whiting however are in numbers that we have not seen for a number of years with heaps of good size amongst them!

So where are the whiting? Everywhere. And that’s not being a smarty pants. We have had solid reports from Rosebud, Tootgarook, Rye, Blairgowrie, Point Nepean and the Pinnace channel. It has been a a breath of fresh air to have anglers in every day telling us about how well they have been doing on the whiting rather than complaining about the lack of fish.

Capt’n Baz from Southern Sport and Game Fishing charters has been taking advantage not only of the terrific whiting fishing but also the good weather – heading offshore and catching some ripping fish.
On the squid front most angler are reporting ‘bag outs’ in short succession at the moment. This is not to say they are all big – but there are plenty of them.
Two of our staff Morne and Luke, have had a couple of trips to the Mt Martha rocks on the way home from work lately – bagging on both occasions in under and hour!
Dean Kritikos fished the peninsula between Mt Martha and Mornington. Best baits were yak, pilchard and squid to land this handy haul of fish with his mates. Plenty there to go around!
