Weekly Report 29/2/08

Offshore: Here we are on the last official day of summer. What summer, you may ask. They only thing that's warm at the moment is the sea temperature but the strong southerly change looks like ruining another weekend of offshore fishing.
Last weekend was the start of the annual interclub game fishing competition at Port Stephens. The first day was a blow-out but the fleet did get to sea on Sunday. Most boats fished straight out rather than coming north into our local waters. I'm told that over 200 marlin of all varieties were raised. This weekend will see the conclusion of the competition, but the weather could still play a hand in determining if and when they fish.
Local pro' have been about the only source of information about local waters. Trag have gone a little quiet but bonito schools continue to attract lots of cobia. There are heaps of mahi mahi at the FAD, but it's 14km offshore so smaller boats should keep an eye on the weather.
Beaches: The good run of tailor and bream continues, with an amazing amount of fish being caught in the middle of the day. Seven Mile Beach remains one of the most popular spots.
Rocks: A few second-hand reports of longtail tuna have been received, but the details are sketchy. The traditional bream and drummer fishing from the rocks has been excellent.
Estuary: Prawns are running after dark and therefore the fishing through the day is a little slow. Early evening and after dark will see the best results. Whiting, bream and flathead are all on offer. The Tuncurry wall has been producing some excellent bream right on the top of the tide. Mulloway fishing continues to disappoint. Crabbing has also slowed.
