The beaches were a hot spot last weekend with Pallarenda firing for flathead and a few nice sized golden trevally getting around which put up a huge fight on the light beach gear. If you wanted to cast around a few soft plastics, small prawn imitations like the zerek live shrimp are one in particular the flathead cannot resist. Work them slow with a twitch of the rod tip getting your shrimp to bounce along the bottom, stirring up the sand which will draw the flatheads attention.

There has still been plenty of large fingermark and bar cheek trouts being caught around the headlands (ie. Cape Cleveland), smaller metal jigs or micro jigs have been working well, but we have seen an increase in the success of using a ‘slow’ jig such as the Ockta Jig from gillies. The best technique for this style of jig as to cast it out letting it sink to the bottom with one slow hop of the rod tip begin slowly winding the jig back in, stopping and starting your retrieve every now and then. Small windows of weather at the moment have provided little chance to head offshore, the better times have been early morning.
Michelle was very excited to get this quality Marlin to the side of the boat for a photo and a quick release.

The creeks will definitely be the place to wet a line this weekend with the winds forecasted over 15knots SE for the next few days at least. There have been some really good reports of solid barra around the mouths of most of the estuary systems in the deeper holes. One simple technique to target these sometimes stubborn fish is trolling deep diving hard bodies, an old classic that stills works a treat is the Killalure River Rat, a perfect size for those bigger fish in tougher conditions. April is a great month for those bigger fish and this weekends tides will suit.
Adam shot down to one of his favourite spots after work recently managing to get this metre plus Barra ashore for a solo photo.
