Report 29/4/16

Post by subeditor » Fri Apr 29, 2016 1:31 pm

Fingers crossed we get a little bit of rain before the weekend and then the winds drop out the skies clear up and the fish come on the chew well that’s my dream anyway. In saying that things are looking good at this stage and from all reports before the winds came up a couple of weeks ago the Spanish mackerel were around in good numbers on the shoals with fish around the 10kg mark smashing trolled garfish and lures trolled around 6 knots. There has also been good numbers coming off most of the reef edges however the fish tend to be slightly smaller around the 6kg mark. In the next few months we should start to see the odd big mack turning up around the rocky headlands and this is when trolled wolf herring baits come into their own. The shoals were also producing some very nice large mouth nannygai before the winds so I would be surprised if they are not still around in good numbers. Cuttlefish heads and slab baits work well on these big predatory fish so don’t go light on the bait size they have big mouths and love a big bait.
Before the winds got up Jack and Zander fished Bramble reef with their dad’s landing these very impressive red emperors.

Closer in shore around the Islands and bay the fingermark reports have dropped off however there has been some nice grunter still willing to take fresh bait. I have also heard of some nice whiting being caught of the beaches around Maggie and along some of the more sheltered stretches of the Northern Beaches so this weekend as the waves drop off they should tend to move in closer along the beach making for some great fun for the whole family over the long weekend.
Lachlan was flicking a few metals around a few of the bait schools off Magnetic Island landing this very nice long tail tuna.

Into the creeks and rivers the reports of quality crabs continues with some monster crabs being caught recently so it is well worth taking the pots if you are heading down one of your favourite creeks this weekend. Interestingly the water temperature seems to have dropped considerably in the last week so as a result you will start to find more Barra feeding in the shallows so the drains look the likely spot this weekend if you are looking to land a few quality Barra. There also seems to be a slight shift back to the hard body lures of late with many anglers tying on a hard body instead of the soft plastic which also tends to be an indication of the areas that most of the catches are coming from due to the drop in water temperature.

How’s this for a crab! Harper caught this monster muddie while on holidays recently at Stanage Bay north of Rockhampton.

Sunday and Monday look ideal for heading offshore and a day of trolling for Spanish mackerel and a night session bait fishing for large mouth sounds like a great weekend to me. If you can’t get offshore then a day flicking shallow diving lures around the drains and over the flats while the crab pots are doing their work is a great option. All in all it looks like a cracker of a weekend to get out on the water.
