Report 16/1/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Jan 16, 2015 9:34 am

Hello all and happy New Year.
I have not done a report lately due to the fresh flow in the river, however most of the gates are shut and the estuary should start cleaning up bringing the fish back up towards town.
There have been reports of King coming back on as far up as the cut through and crabs are starting to move from the port back around through Casuarina and Thompson point. We have some bigger tides this weekend which should prove good for crabs and salmon. Most of the crabs we have been catching of late are starting to fill up and make them really worth targeting. I would stick to the Port or Thompson point and get up the creeks on the big tides. The town reaches of the river will certainly fire for Barra once the season opens again on midday the first of February which is getting close. Can almost scratch that itch we have all been feeling.
On a different note there was a small break in the weather this week which seen me venture out wide and up north. There are heaps of monster cobia and Spanish about at the moment. We hooked up on some serious fish that we didn’t stand a chance of turning. We got spooled on 80LB whilst chasing the fish and for the first time ever I broke one of my good rods on another fish. The line was rated for the rod so just bad luck. There are a lot of birds and surface fish feeding from Conical north and you don’t have to travel to far to find the fish. There is still a lot of bait in the bay and that is obviously why the big numbers of pelagic are around.
Tip of the week:
Port Alma is still the place to land you a feed. With big tides this week, your best bet would be top find a rock bar and fish the run off after the high. You should land yourself a couple of good salmon and if you’re lucky might even strike a good fingermark. The run out of the tide has still been the most productive. Good luck and until next time happy fishing.
